Character name: Yang Xiao Long
Age: 18
Canon: RWBY
Canon point: Post Volume 5
History: Wiki
Three key adjectives: Straightforward, confident, friendly
Influential Events:
Loss of Raven - Shortly after her birth Yang's mother Raven abandoned her family and was never seen again. This shaped Yang's abandonment issues that follow her to this day. This also gave way to her recklessness. As a child she tried to search for her mother tirelessly. As she later tells Blake it consumed her to the point where she put herself and Ruby in very real danger. Although she learned her lesson after that to take better care of herself she also found a strong resolve that she can never give up on her goals. Only she can accomplish what she wants and she needs to make sure she is alive to do so.
Loss of her Arm - Yang suffered a grievous injury trying to protect Blake from the White Fang leader Adam. In her blinding rage and recklessness to defend her friend Adam cut Yang's right arm off. The trauma from the injury left Yang in a depressive slump afterwards and with severe PTSD. She suffers nightmares and is seen shaking during tense moments when she has to fight or use her Semblance. While she recovers with the support from her dad who teaches her to not depend on her Semblance as much like she's been doing she is still seen struggling with her trauma.
She is seen ever since trying to use her Semblance as a last resort and not a crutch in combat. The experience also subdues her somewhat and brings a more pensive and somewhat withdrawn nature to her. While still cheerful and willing to joke around like she always has there is more self reflection in her than there ever has been. She starts to question herself like the overuse of her Semblance more than she ever had in the past.
Blake's Betrayal - After losing her arm to protect her Yang is devastated when Blake runs after the fall of Haven. It brings back her abandonment issues and she becomes easily angry and frustrated whenever her partner's name comes up. She eventually breaks down to Weiss and admits she has too much trouble understanding Blake's actions. She wants to be there for her partner--for her friends and family in general--and she can't do this if Blake keeps running. She doesn't understand why Blake fled.
Later when they are reunited Yang shows off her true strength by being able to forgive Blake. She admits that it will take time for things to return to normal but she assures Blake that they will get better in time. She accepts her back as her partner and even fights side by side with her again. Her maturity is also apparent in this response as she knows this healing process cannot be rushed.
Reuniting With Raven - A distinct change in Yang is that despite her all consuming search for her mother in the past she merely uses her as a means to an end when she finally tracks Raven down. She has since learned to place family before anyone else in the world and because Raven was never there for her she instead focuses her efforts on protecting her half sister and reunite with Qrow to help them. However Raven teaches her in return to be more cautious and to question the things around her that may not be what they seem. Yang thus becomes the first to start asking questions to Ozpin and about their situation. No longer does she seem willing to blindly trust what she is told.
She stands up to Raven in a show of bravery and calls her out on her running away for being afraid. She openly admits with full confidence that she herself is terrified but that she stronger than her mother because despite it she refuses to run away.
When Raven leaves with a tearful apology Yang also begins to cry, emotional about the way she had to dismiss her mother. It is clear she wants to love Raven and the pain she feels at finally finding her only for Raven to be... the way that she is... is evident. Yet she carries on, showing her inner strength and determination yet again, by taking the Relic of Knowledge in her own hands despite the risk and agreeing to carry forward with Ozpin's plan.

Chosen path: Monk
3 Abilities:
• Semblance (canon power): Yang's semblance allows her to use the energy from every blow she receives to give herself more physical strength. It's essentially the ability to absorb kinetic energy and then redirect it back at the opponent through her own blows. Using it requires her to take damage, however, so the weakness to it is obvious. Since she has to take the full force of an attack to turn it around on her opponent she can be quickly weakened if she depends on it too much. Activation of her Semblance is noticeable by her eyes changing red and golden fire engulfing her hair.
• Radiant Sun Bolt (path action)
• Observant (path action)
Why this path?: Yang uses her fists to fight and is excellent at hand to hand combat. This is her preferred method of combat as well. Her strength has always been her physical power and she is notably the strongest member of team RWBY. Thus Monk is a natural choice because of her fighting style. Additionally the more meditative and inner reflection monk's do is something she went through herself during her recovery. She also wants to protect those she loves and her friendly demeanor means she is also more than willing to step in to help strangers in need.
